WANT NOT TO WASTE - ART.2 - POTATOES

RE-USE YOUR POTATOES…THE CHIP HASN’T SAILED YET!

In the UK, over 4.4 million potatoes are wasted every…single…day! (Source: nlwa.gov.uk). Of this, around 56% is wasted by personal choice to not use some parts of the potato i.e. the skin, 25% is described as “not being used in time”, and the rest is due to cooking excess amounts. 100% of these statistics can be avoided by learning how to cheaply and quickly re-use all the potatoes you don’t want, thus feeling good and doing good, what more could you want! Here are 4 ways you can use part of the potato, the whole potato, and nothing but the potato…

1)      INVEST IN STOCKS

Using all your potato peels and other vegetable peels and put them into a stock can help to reduce waste and create delicious future dishes. Simply take your potato peels, and any other vegetable peel, place in a pan, and fill the pan with water until the peels just start to float. Simmer all these ingredients for 1 hour and suddenly you have a tasty stock that will last for 1 week in the fridge or up to 3 months in the freezer.

2)      HASH IT OUT

If you find yourself over prepping potatoes. Don’t stick them in the fridge and throw them away 3 days later. Instead, grate the excess potatoes and add a pinch of salt, black pepper, and a tbsp of plain flour and mix. You can re-mould the potatoes into small “pancakes” and shallow fry the following morning until crisp and golden. Congratulations, you’ve just made hash browns! Serve and impress your friends/partner/family/yourself.

3)      CRISPS

If you find your potatoes sprouting or ugly (rude), you can re-purpose and turn them into something everyone likes…crisps.

Ingredients –

3 White Potatoes

2tbsp Dried Rosemary

2tbsp Sea Salt

1tbsp Oil (any variety)

Heat oven to 170 degrees (fan). Soak sliced potatoes in hot salt water for 20 minutes. Drain the water and mix in the dried rosemary, sea salt and oil until all slices are covered. Place potato slices on a baking tray on grease-proof paper and bake for 40 minutes. Enjoy!

4)      MAKE YOUR FLOWERS GROW

Composting is a great way to create a circular economy in your home environment. Potato peels are full of vitamins you can use to enhance the quality of your soil and provide some much-needed nutrition for your neglected house and garden plants.

Overall, there are plenty of ways you can go about this, and creativity has no boundaries. Just don’t make potato peel soup on its own, that’s disgusting…
