RE-USE YOUR STALE BREAD, SAVE A LIFE!
We, as the British public, have a general issue with throwing away bread, specifically stale bread ends. The dreaded crust of our favourite loafs account for the 900,000 of over 6 million tonnes of food household waste every year. That amounts to over 24 million slices of bread, that, with a little creativity, you can turn it into something delicious and useful! Here are five simple and tasty ways to re-use your stale bread, whether you’re looking to make breadcrumbs, create croutons, or try something a little more adventurous…woo…
1. BRING ME TO LIFE WITH HEAT
A quick way to bring back some life to stale bread is to toast it or warm it in the oven. Lightly spritz with water or wrap it in a damp towel before popping it in the oven for a few minutes. It’s not quite the same as fresh bread, but it helps soften it up.
2. LOUBOUTIN CROUTONS #FANCY
This is one of the easiest and most versatile ways to re-use stale bread. Simply tear or cut your bread into small pieces, drizzle a little oil of choice, salt and pepper to stop blandness, and bake in the oven for only 10 minutes at 170 degrees. You can season it with other herbs and store in a container to use in recipes like meatballs and salads.
3. GO ALL HANSEL AND GRETEL ON IT
Blitz all your stale bread either with a blender, or if you don’t have one, break into tiny pieces by hand. You can use the breadcrumbs you’ve created for a whole range of coatings for chicken, pork, turkey and mushrooms. Simply take some beaten eggs, coat your product, cover in the breadcrumbs, and shallow fry for 15-20 minutes, ensuring a crispy coating and a delicious end result.
4. WASH YOUR WHISKEY
Stale bread is ideal for spirit infusions as it slow releases the starchy and luxurious flavours and consistency rather than soaking up all the product and reducing your yields. It also maintains its structure to make straining it out much easier and your left with a more clarified, clean spirit. Try it in an Old Fashioned with your favourite bourbon for a unique drinking experience.
5. FRENCH TOAST
Stale bread is ideal for making French toast. It soaks up the egg mixture without falling apart and ends up crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Add your favourite toppings, such as maple syrup or berries, for a tasty breakfast.
** CONCLUSION: KEEP YOUR BREAD! **
Next time you find yourself with stale bread, remember these simple and creative ways to make the most of it. Not only do you get to enjoy a second round of deliciousness, but you’re also cutting down on food waste, so it’s a win-win.
Note: If the bread is mouldy, this article clearly doles’t apply and you should compost it instead!
